Questions to Ask Your Landscaping Contractor in Michigan

Most people use price as the primary factor in choosing a landscaping contractor. However, the real test of your contractor starts when the project is complete and the bill is paid.

Here are some important questions you should ask your potential Michigan landscaping contractor. The answers should identify a better contractor and allow you to make a decision based on many important factors, not just price.

1. How long have you been in this business?

A company that has been serving clients for years earns a reputation as reliable and dependable. Jetstream Landscape & Irrigation has been operating since June of 1986 as a professional landscape firm! You can be confident we will be around next month and next year when you need us.

2. Are you licensed as a landscaping contractor in Michigan?

A trustworthy company is one that is properly licensed and therefore accountable to several governing bodies. Jetstream Landscape & Irrigation is a registered Michigan corporation and a registered nursery dealer by the Department of Agriculture.

3. Are you properly and fully insured?

A properly insured company removes your risk of loss and allows a feeling of security during the installation of your project. Jetstream Landscape & Irrigation has comprehensive insurance coverage to protect you in the event of an accident.

4. What warranty comes with the work you provide?

You want a contractor that will stand behind its products and service. All Jetstream installed materials and workmanship are warranted for at least one full year. See your proposal for the specifics of your warranty.

5. Does your company provide timely service after the sale?

Cheaper pricing often results in zero service after the sale. The company you choose should have a full time staff that will service its clients after the sale in a timely manner. The Jetstream office is staffed from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday thru Friday which means most often you will reach a live person to handle your concern.

6. Do you have a list of references of existing satisfied customers?

The best indicator of a quality contractor is a satisfied previous customer. Jetstream will provide a list (upon request) of previous customers. We have installed just over 1200 sprinkler systems and more than 800 landscape projects.

7. Do any employees have specific industry level certifications or training?

A company that continually improves its knowledge of horticulture means you receive a high level of expertise. Jetstream Landscape & Irrigation has a policy of continuing education for its employees and currently has a number of employees who have achieved the industry certification of "Michigan Certified Nurseryman".

8. Are you a member of any professional organizations?
Being a member of professional organizations demonstrates a company’s commitment to its industry and its community. Jetstream is a member of both the Grand Blanc and Fenton Regional Chambers of Commerce, Genesee Area Landscape Association, Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association, and Professional Landcare Network of America.

Should You Take the Low Bid?

It was Ruskin who said "There is hardly anything in the world that one may cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper; and the people who consider price only, are such men's lawful prey."

Remember, in order for the contractor to continue serving you and other customers in a responsible manner, they must stay in business and show fair profit.

Simply "paying the bills" is little incentive to a reputable contractor. Again, consider the cost of other items you own or desire compared to the value of your landscape or residence. The low bid is not always the cheapest. Re-building or replacing an improperly designed or installed system may cost you many times the amount you thought you saved. Remember, you are installing a permanent underground system that must be installed right the first time.
